Bangladeshi beef patties x NYC chopped cheese

No Rating

I have such fond childhood memories of enjoying “pettis” at dawats or my parents grabbing them from the local bakery to have as part of our bikaler nasta (afternoon snacks) in Bangladesh.

Chopped cheese, on the other hand, is an iconic NYC sandwich (and it goes without saying, one of my absolute favorites). I figured why not combine these two beautiful things to pay homage to my two lovely homes!

Ingredients:

  • 1 puff pastry sheet, divided into 4 squares
  • 1 lb ground beef or hamburger patties
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 white onion, sliced
  • 1 jalapeno
  • 4 American cheese slices
  • Egg wash
  • ½ teaspoon sesame seeds, optional

Sauce:

  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 2 tbsp mayo
  • 1 tsp pickle juice
  • 1 tsp chopped pickles
  • 1 tsp mustard (forgot to mention this in the video. Oops!)

Directions:

  • Preheat the oven to 400
  • Heat your favorite pan and add the ground beef along with garlic powder, onion powder, and salt
  • Add thinly sliced onion and jalapeno to the ground beef. Cook for 7-8 minutes
  • Add the cheese slices and “chop” them in. Cook for 1-2 more minutes (or until the cheese is incorporated)
  • Cut a puff pastry sheet into 4 squares
  • Assemble the patties (as shown in the video below)
  • Brush with egg wash and sprinkle on some sesame seeds
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown and puffy. Enjoy with the special sauce!
