Creamy avocados with crispy and flavor-packed chanachur chat are a match made in heaven! Granted, this feels like a very LA-Bangali concoction but the textures and flavors work so well together – How did no one think of this earlier? Funny enough, this recipe was actually an accidental creation. I regularly have avocado toast for breakfast (very LA of me I know) and I normally like to dress it up with fried onions for some textural contrast. One morning, I was on autopilot while making the toast. I reached inside my fried onion jar, grabbed a handful, and sprinkled it on top of the avocado mash. It was only when I looked down on the toast, I realized that I accidentally put chanachur on top (the chanachur jar was next to the fried onion jar). I laughed at my absent-mindedness and then proceeded to give this concoction a try – It was DELICIOUS! The taste reminded me of my love for jhalmuri, a very popular Bangladeshi street food and I figured why not combine the two?
Avocado mash
- 1 ripe avocado
- 0.5 tbsp lime juice
- Salt to taste
- Handful of cilantro leaves
Chanachur chaat
- ½ cup of chanachur
- Half of a small cucumber, chopped
- Half of a tomato, chopped
- 1 small pearl onion or ½ of a shallot, chopped
- 2 tsp achar oil
- 2 chilies, optional
- 0.5 tbsp lime juice
- Handful of cilantro leaves
Instructions:
- Mash the avocado with the ingredients listed above. Set aside
- Toast a slice of sourdough bread with butter or olive oil
- While the bread is toasting, finely chop cucumber, tomato, shallot, and cilantro.
- Add the veggies to a small bowl with achar oil, lime juice, and chilies (optional).
- Mix the ingredients well
- Spread the avocado mash on the toasted bread.
- Add the crispy chanachur to the veggie mixture. Give it a quick mix!
- Add the chanachur chat on top and enjoy immediately for maximum crispiness!
Notes:
- Chanachur is a staple snack in Bangladeshi households. You should be able to find it at a South Asian grocery store (ideally Bangladeshi). It is also referred to as “hot mix” or “Bombay mix”
- Do not let the chanachur mix sit for too long, as it will get soggy. For maximum crispiness, assemble the avocado toast first and then top immediately with the chanachur chaat.
